Stephen Anderson, composer and pianist, has had works performed by ensembles throughout the United States (including performances at CBDNA and ITEMA), and his recordings are published by Summit Records, Albany, and Nagel Heyer Records. As a jazz artist, his Nation Degeneration (2010) and Forget Not (2008) trio CDs each received 41/2 stars (out of 5) from the All Music Guide-Forget Not was nominated best jazz "Debut CD" (3rd Annual Village Voice Jazz Critics Poll 2008)-Nation Degeneration was selected to represent Summit Records at the 53rd Grammy Awards in the category of "Best Jazz Instrumental Album." Mormon Artists Group commissioned Anderson to compose an original work, and "Isaiah," for SATB chorus, string orchestra, and piano is the result. As he wrote the work, which was premiered at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Anderson kept a journal that chronicles his internal struggles. It captures the behind-the-scenes process into creation of contemporary concert music that few people have the opportunity to witness. At the same time, Anderson faced the upheaval because of the deaths of a colleague and family members, his own health issues, and the challenges of taking beloved scriptural texts and creating something personal and new from them.
